Tests Given at Baxter Springs High School

Baxter Springs High School Code (for testing):  170-225

Plan

Grade:  10th Grade Students (School pays for the test)
Given:  October/November
Purpose:  Familiarizes students with a standardized testing environment, provides students with an estimated range of their ACT assessment composite score, plus sub-scores in English, Math, Reading, and Science reasoning (these are then used to suggest course work appropriate for their 11-12 grade years), given students an assessment of their study skills and includes an interest inventory that helps direct students to careers, jobs, or occupations they have an interest and/or aptitude in.  Further enhances their familiarity with the "world of work" map regions.

A.S.V.A.B.

Grade:  11th and 12th grade students who want to take the test (test is free)
Given:  October
Purpose:  This is the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery.  It measures student's verbal, academic, and mathematical abilities.  Sub-scores are received in word knowledge, paragraph completion, arithmetic reasoning, math knowledge, general science, auto and shop information, mechanical comprehension, electronics information, numerical operations, and coding.  The test results incorporate the abilities they have demonstrated on the test, the level of educational preparation they are willing to commit to beyond high school, and their own values to direct them to careers that they would be well suited in.  This test is required for entry into any branch of the military.

P.S.A.T./N.M.S.Q.T

Grade:  10th and 11th grade students who want to take the test. (Individual students pay for the test unless they are a junior and qualify for the free/reduced lunch program.  If this is the case they need to see Mrs. Taylor to get the appropriate paperwork completed.  All information is kept confidential.)
Given:  October
Purpose:  This is the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merits Scholarship Qualifying Test.  It measures the verbal, mathematical, and writing abilities of students and compares them with other college-bound juniors nationwide.  Students, who take this test, also compete for the National Merit Scholarships if their selection index is high enough.

A.C.T.

Grade:  9th through 12th grade students who want to take the test. (Individual students pay for the test with 11th or 12th grade students who qualify for free/reduced lunches getting two ACT testing fees waived.  To get the test fee waived the student needs to get a form from Mrs. Taylor.  All information is kept confidential.)
Given:  The test is given five times a year (October, December, February, April, and June).  The test is given in local area schools.  We give the ACT on the February national testing date.
Purpose:  Measures the student's English, Math, Reading, and Science reasoning skills as compared to other college bound students nation-wide.  Results are used for college admissions, placement purposes, and some scholarships.  Also gets students on mailing list and college rosters for the schools they indicated an interest in attending. Provides students with accurate information with regard to where they would rank among the student body of selected colleges.  Also included is an interest inventory that helps direct students to careers, jobs or occupations they have an interest in, and, again, uses the "world of work" map region for these.
